The first victory over a top 5 ranked team since 1999, this play, game, and season represents the turning point in a post-Paterno era. Penn State would go on to finish the 2016 season ranked 7th, having failed to earn a top 25 ranking the previous 6 seasons. A year later Penn State would continue their climb back towards powerhouse status, achiveing another top-10 rank in 2017.

2010 Regular Season
Joe Paterno's 400th win
Penn State vs. Northwestern

This game couldn't have made Joe Paterno more proud. After trailling by three touchdowns, Penn State clawed back to 14-21.Then, a 36 yard strike to tie it up would officially cement the comeback as everyone could feel that the game was over. After scoring two more touchdowns, Penn State would win. Joe Pa was officially in a bracket all on his own - 400 wins. The only D-I football coach to ever reach the mark.

1987 National Championship
Undefeated National Champions
Penn State vs. Miami

Fiesta Bowl
Although undefeated throughout the season, Penn State were heavy underdogs against a top ranked Miami team who were also undefeated having outscored opponents 420-136 throughout the season with an offense boasting stars Testaverde and Irvin. However, Penn State's defense shone throughout the game, intercepting Testaverde 5 times including a notable goaline intereception with 18 seconds left to seal the game.

1983 National Championship
Garrity's Leaping Catch
Penn State vs. Georgia

January 1, 1983
Superdome, LA
Paterno led the Nittany Lions into the 1983 Sugar Bowl with hopes of beating #1 Georgia to become national champions. Only leading by 3 early in the 4th quarter, Blackledge came off of a play-action to hit Garrity streaking down the sideline who made a leaping catch to secure the 48 yard touchdown pass and give Penn State a 10 point lead. Georgia wouldn't be able to overcome the deficit as Penn State would win their first ever national championship.
