A game which marked Wisconsin's first Rose Bowl victory, Bevell who was not known as a running quarterback evaded the UCLA blitz to scamble for a 21 yard touchdown to give Wisconsin a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter which they wouldn't relinquish.

Another Rose Bowl matchup against UCLA.. Opening the scoring was Ron Dayne, who burst through a huge hole in the line for a 54 yard TD run in the first quarter. The D-1A all-time leader in rushing yards finished the game as MVP with 4 touchdowns and the season as the Heisman winner. The Dayne Train.

Losing by 2 scores with 8 minutes left, Wisconsin faced a tough test attempting to mount a comeback against the #5 Purdue team. One of the most memorable plays in Wisconsin history, a hard hit on an Orton scramble popped the ball loose and Scott Starks returned it for the game-winning score.

Ohio State, the #1 team in the nation, entered Madison as the projected favorites. Immediately, the wind was taken out of their sails as on the first play of the game, Gilreath returned the opening kickoff for 97 yards. It would be the first time Wisconsin beat the #1 team since 1981.
