Len Bias dominated with a 35 point performance as unranked Maryland upset top ranked #1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill to hand the Tarheels their first loss at the Dean Smith Center. This game put the gold plating on Bias as it became clear to many he was just as good, if not better, than Jordan.

Having not won the ACC tournament since 1984, Maryland entered the tourney after a very mediocre regular season. However, Maryland would win 3 games in 3 days against the top 3 ACC seeds, all ranked in the top 25, culminating in an overtime win against Duke to win Gary Williams his only ACC title.
