1994 World Cup - Group Stage, USA
Beating the favorites
USMNT vs Colombia
2 - 1
22 June, 1994
Columbia was picked by Pele to win this world cup on the back of a 28-game unbeaten run and a 5-0 defeat of Argentina. They were also heavily funded by drug lords at the apex of their power, and the team received death threat phone calls from their drug cartel sponsors in the dressing room minutes before kick-off. Yet, the Columbians lost to the massive underdog U.S. team in the sun-kissed Rose Bowl. Colmbia's captain, Andres Escobar, scored an own goal and, one month later, was murdered outside a Medellin nightclub for it.
