Virginia Tech came into the game undefeated and with a #3 ranking, but they left a 12 point lead slip away and were now trailing by 1 point with time running out. With 1:11 left in the game, quarterback Michael Vick started a drive from Virginia Tech's own 16 yard line. Vick advanced the ball to West Virginia's 27, and with 5 seconds left, kicker Shayne Graham took the field for a field goal attempt. The 44-yard field goal was good, giving Virginia Tech the win in the "Miracle in Morgantown."

Virginia Tech's first huge bowl win game in 1995 in the Sugar Bowl against Texas. Virginia Tech's defense held Texas to only 10 points, while quarterback Jim Druckenmiller led the team to 4 touchdowns. The third touchdown for Virginia Tech was a monster 55 yard pas from Druckenmiller to Bryan Still. One more touchdown after that and Virginia Tech has a resounding 28 - 10 win.

Virginia Tech's first ever bowl win came at the very last second of the 1986 Peach Bowl. Virginia Tech had retaken the lead in the 4th quarter but a field goal by North Carolina State left Virginia Tech trailing by 2 with time running out. After driving 57 yards in 1:49, kicker Chris Kinzer steppd up for a 40-yard field goal with 4 seconds on the clock. The kick sailed through the uprights as time expired, giving Virginia Tech the win.

In Virginia Tech's first BCS bowl game they secured a resounding victory over Cincinnati. Cincinnati took the lead in the first quarter, but it was all Virginia Tech after that. Virginia Tech scored 20 unanswered points, with the last touchdown coming from game MVP Darren Evans on a 6 yard rush.
