D.C.'s first Championship was also the first MLS Cup ever. Midway through the game though it did not look like D.C. would prevail. Trailing 0 - 2 to Los Angeles, D.C. made two key substitutions that netted them two goals. Tony Sanneh and Shawn Medved both scored to take the game to extra time. In the 94th minute D.C. got a corner kick and Eddie Pope got his head on it, netting the golden goal and D.C. the title.
