In 1998 the final Copa Interamericana pitted D.C. against Vasco de Gama and it was America's final chance to win the Cup. Vasco de Gama took the first leg, and D.C. entered the second game down a point. Tony Sanneh got a goal in the 34th to even the score and then Eddie Pope came up big once again off a volley from Roy Lassiter. The goal gave D.C. the win on points and finally won the Cup for the U.S.A.
