Los Angeles was seeking their 5th MLS Cup championship and things were looking good after Gyasi Zardes scored in the 52nd. But New England battled back and evened the score in the 79th, forcing the game to go into extra time. 21 minutes into extra time, Los Angeles prevailed. Robbie Keane connected on a long ball from Marcelo Sarvas for the win. The win gave Los Angeles the most MLS Cups of any team.

In Los Angeles's three previous MLS Cup championships they had never been down. In fact they'd never had a goal scored on them. But now defending their title in a rematch with Houston, Los Angeles was down a goal at halftime. In the 60th minute David Beckham's corner was cleared out of the box, but Los Angeles regained possession and played the ball back in. Omar Gonzalez connected on a cross from Juninho to tie the game. Goals from Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane sealed the win and gave Los Angeles back to back titles.

In Los Angeles's fourth trip to the MLS Cup Final they were determined to take home the cup. It took them two periods of extra time to do so, but they finally got their first championship. In the 113th minute Carlos Ruiz, Tyrone Marshall and Chris Albright mounted a counterattack. Albright struck a leading pass to Marshall who ran it down and sent a cross into the box. Ru?z one-touched the ball into the right of the net, giving Los Angeles their first championship.
