Behind Coach Jimmy V, the cinderella story was complete. Lorenzo Charles converted Whittenburg's off-line desperation 3pt shot into a decisive dunk as sixth seeded NC State upset #1 overall Houston. The Cougars, nicknamed "Phi Slama Jama", featured future NBA HOF'ers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Facing Bill Walton and UCLA in the Final Four, N.C. State erased a seven-point deficit in Double OT behind David Thompson's 28 points to halt UCLA's string of seven consecutive championships, ending the Bruins' 38-game playoff winning streak. N.C. State would move on to beat Marquette to claim their title.

Cinderella run begins

Losing with 5 seconds left in OT, a 1st round exit to 11 seeded Pepperdine was threatening. Whittenburg missed the FT but impending doom to turned to heroics as McQueen snatched the offensive rebound and scored the tying shot to send the game into 2OT. NC State would win and continue their 1983 cinderella run.

The 2015 season had fantastic highs including beating #2 Duke, #9 Louisville, and #15 UNC. Their giant-killer mentality was clear in their matchup against #1 seeded Villanova as Barber's clutch FTs made it a two possesion game with 14 seconds left as the Wolfpack would reach the Sweet Sixteen
