Kansas City was looking for their second U.S. Open Cup title, but after regulation and extra time the score was tied at 1 - 1 and the game moved to penalties. After 3 penalties aside the teams each had scored 2 penalties. Graham Zusi stepped up for Kansas City and sent the ball over the post. Now Seattle had a chance to take the lead. Christian Tiffert shot low to the right for Seattle but Kansas City keeper Jimmy Nielsen was ready and saved the shot. Paulo Nagamura made his for Kansas City and then Seattle's Eddie Johnson missed high, securing the title for Kansas City.

Kansas City were heavy underdogs in this international friendly against heavyweight Manchester United. Kansas City drew first blood in the 11th on a goal from Davy Arnaud but Manchester United answered in the 41st with a goal of their own. Not to be outdone, Kansas City answered back immediately in the 42nd, driving down the field and getting a corner kick. Ryan Smith's corner found Kei Kamara's head and Kansas City went up 2 - 1. They kept the lead in the second half and defeated the English powerhouse.

In their first trip to the MLS Cup Finals Kansas City took home the title. Facing a strong Chicago side, Kansas City struck early, making a 4 on 4 run in the 11th minute. Chris Klein took the ball up the right side and crossed into the box and a minor deflection left the ball right at Miklos Molnar's feet. Molnar battled defender Jesse Marsch and put the ball in the lower right corner of the goal. It was the only goal of the game and earned Kansas City their first championship.

In the 2013 MLS Cup Final Salt Lake City scored first early in the second half. In the 76th minute Kansas City got a corner kick and Graham Zusi stepped up to take it. Zusi's kick perfectly soared into the box and found a leaping Aur?lien Collin who headed it in to tie the game. Kansas City went on to win on penalties 7 - 6, and again it was Collin, taking the 10th penalty for Kansas City, who secured the championship for the team.
